Top 10 Waterfalls to hike to when visiting Tanzania in 2023

Updated: Jun 16

As a traveler, I'm always on the lookout for hidden gems. Places that are off the beaten path, away from the crowds. Tanzania is known for its wildlife and stunning landscapes, but did you know it's also home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world? From towering cascades to secluded swimming holes, Tanzania's waterfalls offer a refreshing escape from the heat and hustle of the city.

During my travels to Tanzania, I made it a point to seek out some of these hidden gems. I was not disappointed. The waterfalls I discovered were breathtaking, and each one had its own unique charm. In this post, I'll share my favorite Tanzania waterfalls and why they're worth a visit.

Section 1: Materuni Waterfall

The Materuni waterfall is located in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. It's a short hike from the Materuni village, and the trail is lined with coffee plantations. The waterfall itself is 80 meters tall, and the water drops into a refreshing pool below. The swimming hole is perfect for a dip on a hot day.

What makes the Materuni waterfall special is the surrounding landscape. The lush green forest and misty air create a magical atmosphere. The area is also home to the Chagga tribe, who have lived in the region for generations. Visitors can learn about their way of life and even participate in a coffee tour.

If you're looking for a peaceful escape from the city, Materuni waterfall is the perfect place to unwind and connect with nature.

Section 2: Kikuletwa Hot Springs

Kikuletwa Hot Springs is a hidden oasis in the Arusha region of Tanzania. The springs are crystal clear, and the water is a perfect temperature for swimming. The surrounding trees and foliage provide shade, making it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the scenery.

What makes Kikuletwa Hot Springs unique is the way the water flows. It bubbles up from an underground source, creating a natural pool. The water is so clear that you can see fish swimming below the surface. It's truly a magical experience.

The best time to visit Kikuletwa Hot Springs is during the dry season, when the water is at its clearest. It's an easy day trip from Arusha, and there are plenty of local guides who can show you the way.

Section 3: Ndoro Waterfall

Ndoro Waterfall is located in the Usambara Mountains of Tanzania. It's a bit off the beaten path, but the journey is well worth it. The waterfall is tucked away in a secluded valley, and the surrounding forest is home to a variety of birds and monkeys.

The waterfall itself is 30 meters tall, and the water drops into a small pool below. The pool is perfect for swimming, and the water is crystal clear. The area around the waterfall is also a great spot for a picnic or a hike.

What makes Ndoro Waterfall special is the sense of peace and tranquility. The sound of the waterfall and the chirping of the birds create a serene atmosphere. It's the perfect place to disconnect from the world and connect with nature.

Tanzania is home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. The Materuni waterfall, Kikuletwa Hot Springs, and Ndoro Waterfall are just a few examples of the hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Each one offers a unique experience and a chance to connect with nature. If you're planning a trip to Tanzania, be sure to add these waterfalls to your itinerary. You won't be disappointed.

I haven’t tried waterfall hiking yet. But most people who have already tried it said it’s good. Maybe I should try it one day.
